HiSET FAQs

Where to test? When is testing offered?

RISE Academy is a certified testing center which offers HiSET testing most Wednesdays and Saturdays. Test center location: 2880 Sutro St Building B, Reno, NV.

How do I sign up for HiSET testing? How old do I have to be to take the HiSET?

Signing up for the HiSET exam must be completed in-person only. You must present a VALID government issued ID and payment for the test. (Check with the front office about what forms of ID are accepted.) You must be 18 & over to test. 16 & 17 year olds must have a letter from the superintendent to test. Check with our counselor for more information on how to obtain that.

What resources are available to prepare me for the HiSET?

RISE Academy offers programs to better prepare testers for any future HiSET testing. Speak with a counselor about program specifics. There are also practice test resources available on the hiset.org website. First, navigate to “RESOURCES” Then, click on “TEST TAKER” on the middle left side of the page. This is where you can find practice tests and other preparation materials.

How long does it take to complete the HiSET exam and what subject areas are covered?

The HiSET program has a combined testing length of about 7 hours. It covers the following five subject areas:

  • Language Arts – Reading: 50 multiple choice questions (65 min) (80 Min for Spanish)
  • Language Arts – Writing: 60 multiple choice questions and 1 Essay Prompt (120 min)
  • Mathematics: 55 multiple choice questions (90 min)
  • Science: 60 multiple choice questions (80 min)
  • Social Studies: 60 multiple choice questions (70 min)

At RISE, we only allow testers the option to test up to 3 subtests in any given test session. For example, testers could schedule 3 subtests in one session and 2 subtests in another. Alternatively, testers could choose to sign up to test 1 subject at a time. NOTE: You are allowed up to 6 attempts per subtest in a calendar year.

How much does the exam cost?

The PSI test fee for each subtest is $20 for computer-based testing ($15 Test Fee + $5 Test Center Fee). If you were to pay for the full battery of tests, the full fee is $100. Additionally, there is a $5.00 fee for each retake.

How do I get my test scores? How do I get my certificate?

You will have to visit Diplomasender.com and register as a tester. You can access scores and request a free certificate. You will need to wait at least a week after your first test to be able to access this. Please have your HiSET ID or ETS # as this is a requirement to register.

How long will it take for me to get my scores?

If you’ve taken the computer-based test, you'll receive your unofficial score for multiple-choice subtests immediately after finishing each subtest (except for the Language Arts — Writing essay). PSI  will review and certify scores and provide official scores within:

  • (3-5) business days for the (Language Arts – Writing) results.

Did you pass?

  • Scored at least 8 out of 20 on each of the five subtests.
  • Scored at least 2 out of 6 on the essay.
  • Achieved a total scaled score on all five HiSET subtests of at least 45 out of 100.
